Collection/1600s

Vermeer painted his home town from across the harbor, probably from an upper window. The foreground lies in the shadow of a passing cloud, while sunlight falls on the roofs and the tower of the New Church behind them.
The French novelist Marcel Proust called it the most beautiful painting in the world. Look for the sandy texture in the bricks and boats: Vermeer mixed grit into some of his paint so the walls would catch the light.
