Van Gogh painted himself in September 1889 at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, in a blue suit against a blue background that seems to swirl and flicker around him. It is one of the last self-portraits he made.

He sent it to his brother Theo. Look at how the curling strokes of the background continue into his jacket, while his face and red-orange hair stand out in sharp contrast.
