Collection/1800s

A farm couple sleeps in the shade of a haystack at midday, their shoes and sickles set aside. Van Gogh painted it at the asylum in Saint-Rémy in the winter of 1889–90, working from a black-and-white print after Jean-François Millet.
He called these copies “translations” into his own colors. Here the yellow straw and the blue sky are pure Van Gogh.
