The Procuress by Johannes Vermeer

In a brothel, a soldier in red puts his hand on a young woman’s breast and drops a coin into her palm, while an old woman watches. On the left, a young man in a black cap grins at us with a glass in his hand.

He may be Vermeer himself. Painted in 1656, it is one of his earliest works, and the first he dated.
