The Poor Poet by Carl Spitzweg

A poet lies in bed in a freezing attic, wrapped in blankets, a quill between his lips, an umbrella hanging over him against the leaking roof. In the stove, his manuscripts are burning to keep him warm.

Carl Spitzweg painted it in 1839, and it became one of the most popular paintings in Germany. Look at his fingers: he is counting syllables, or pinching a flea.
