Collection/1600s

A family celebrates around a table: the parents sing and drink, the grandmother sings from a songbook, and the children are already smoking and drinking too. On the mantelpiece hangs a note with a Dutch saying: as the old sing, so pipe the young.
Jan Steen painted it in 1668. In Dutch, “a Jan Steen household” still means a chaotic, messy home.
