The Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Three hunters trudge home through the snow with their dogs, carrying a single fox. Below them a whole village carries on: people skate on frozen ponds, play a kind of curling, and tend a fire outside an inn.

It is one of a series of paintings of the times of year that Bruegel made in 1565 for a rich Antwerp merchant. Five of them survive. Look at the crows in the bare trees and the bird gliding across the pale green sky.
