The Harvesters by Pieter Bruegel the Elder

Peasants cut and stack the wheat on a hot summer day. Others eat lunch in the shade of a pear tree, and one sprawls asleep, his shirt open. Behind them the landscape opens up all the way to a harbor.

Like The Hunters in the Snow, this belonged to Bruegel’s series of the seasons. It is the only one in the United States. Look for the path cut through the tall wheat, with workers walking it carrying jugs.
