Collection/1600s

A young woman finishes a glass of wine while a man in a big cloak waits to refill it, his hand on the jug. Light comes through a stained-glass window with a figure holding a bridle, a symbol of temperance.
Vermeer painted it around 1660. The message seems clear, but the woman’s face is hidden behind her glass, so we never learn what she thinks.
