In the dark, a woman points at Peter while a soldier demands to know whether he is a follower of Jesus. Peter, hands on his chest, denies it.

It is one of Caravaggio’s last paintings, from 1610, the year he died. Look at the three faces, caught in a sharp beam of light, and the soldier’s two fingers.
