The Dance Class by Edgar Degas

A ballet class in the old Paris Opera rehearsal room. The ballet master leans on his stick; the dancers wait, stretch, scratch their backs, fiddle with their earrings. Degas painted more than half of his works on the subject of dance.

He wasn’t interested in the performance, but in the moments around it. Look for the green watering can at the lower left, used to dampen the floor so it wasn’t slippery.
