Collection/1600s

A rich young man plays cards with two women and a cardsharp. The cheat on the left pulls an ace of diamonds from his belt behind his back, while the women exchange sideways glances.
Georges de La Tour painted it in the 1630s, and it is a lesson in watching eyes. Follow the looks: everyone at the table knows something except the young man.
