The Charging Chasseur by Théodore Géricault

An officer of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard twists in the saddle of a rearing horse, sword drawn, in a cloud of smoke. Géricault was only 21 when he showed it at the Salon of 1812.

It made his name instantly. Look at the horse’s eye and flared nostrils: Géricault loved horses, and they would play a part in his own early death after a fall.
