The Bookworm by Carl Spitzweg

An old scholar stands on top of a library ladder, a book in each hand, one under his arm and another between his knees, completely lost in reading.

Carl Spitzweg painted it around 1850 with gentle humor. The sign on the shelf says “Metaphysics.” He made several versions of the scene.
