Syndics of the Drapers' Guild by Rembrandt

Five officials of Amsterdam’s cloth guild sit at a table with their servant behind them. Their job was to check the quality of dyed cloth. Rembrandt painted them in 1662 as if we had just walked in and interrupted them.

One man is half-standing, as if about to rise. Millions of Americans know the image without knowing it: it has decorated boxes of Dutch Masters cigars since the early 20th century.
