Snap the Whip by Winslow Homer

Schoolboys play “snap the whip” in a meadow: they run holding hands, and the boys at the end are flung off. Behind them stands a red one-room schoolhouse.

Winslow Homer painted the scene in 1872, just after the Civil War, as a picture of rural American childhood. He made two versions; this smaller one is at the Met.
