Sistine Madonna by Raphael

The Virgin and Child step forward on clouds between two saints, as if a curtain had just been drawn back. Raphael painted it for a church in Piacenza, and it was later bought by the Elector of Saxony for Dresden.

Most people today know the two little angels at the bottom, leaning on the ledge and looking up, bored. They have appeared on stamps, umbrellas and countless postcards. Look into the clouds behind Mary: they are full of faint faces.
