Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror by Parmigianino

The 21-year-old Parmigianino painted himself as he saw himself in a convex barber’s mirror, on a curved piece of wood. His hand in the foreground swells to enormous size, while the room bends around him.

He brought it to Rome in 1524 to show off his talent and gave it to Pope Clement VII. Five centuries later it inspired a famous poem by John Ashbery.
