Collection/1600s

Rembrandt painted, drew and etched himself around eighty times, more than any artist before him. This one dates from the year he went bankrupt and saw his house and collection sold.
He doesn’t flatter himself. Look at the heavy, sagging skin, built up with thick, almost sculpted paint, against the flatter dark of his clothes. His gaze is steady and a little wary.
