Self-Portrait as the Apostle Paul by Rembrandt

Rembrandt portrays himself as Saint Paul, with a manuscript in his hands and a sword hilt sticking out of his coat, Paul’s usual attribute. He looks up at us with raised eyebrows, almost questioning.

He painted it in 1661, in his mid-fifties. It is the only self-portrait in which he casts himself as a saint.
