Pygmalion and Galatea by Jean-Léon Gérôme

In Ovid’s myth, the sculptor Pygmalion falls in love with his ivory statue of a woman, and the goddess Venus brings her to life. Gérôme shows the moment of the first kiss: her legs are still marble, her upper body already warm and pink.

Gérôme was a sculptor as well as a painter. Look for Cupid in the upper left, aiming his arrow.
