Collection/1700s

Louis XIV, the Sun King, poses in his coronation robes of blue velvet and ermine, sword at his hip, one hand on his scepter. He was 63, but he shows off his legs in white silk stockings: he had been a dancer in his youth.
Hyacinthe Rigaud painted it in 1701 as a gift for the king’s grandson, the new King of Spain. Louis liked it so much he kept it.
