Pilgrimage to Cythera by Antoine Watteau

Elegant couples gather on a hillside under a statue of Venus, ready to sail to, or perhaps from, Cythera, the island of love. Cupids flutter around the golden boat.

Watteau painted it in 1717 for his admission to the French Academy, which invented a new category for it: the fête galante. Nobody agrees whether the mood is joyful or melancholy.
