Collection/1500s

A village crowded with people acting out more than a hundred Dutch sayings, literally. A man bangs his head against a brick wall. Another fills in the well after the calf has drowned. A woman hangs a blue cloak on her husband, meaning she is cheating on him.
Bruegel painted it in 1559 as a picture of human folly. Many of the sayings still exist in Dutch and English. Try to find someone “armed to the teeth” and someone casting roses before swine.
