Madame Georges Charpentier and Her Children by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

The wife of the publisher Georges Charpentier sits in her Japanese-style salon with her two children. Her son Paul, in a blue dress like his sister, sits beside her; little boys often wore dresses then. Her daughter sits on the family’s big Newfoundland dog.

The portrait was a hit at the Salon of 1879 and helped make Renoir’s career.
