Collection/1700s

The chemist Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry, sits at his desk among glass instruments. His wife Marie-Anne leans on his shoulder and looks out at us. She worked with him, and drew the illustrations for his books.
David painted them in 1788. Six years later Lavoisier, who had also been a tax collector, was guillotined in the Revolution.
