Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez

The little Spanish princess Margarita stands in the center, surrounded by her maids of honor (the meninas), a dwarf, a dog and a chaperone. On the left Velázquez paints himself at an enormous canvas.

But who is he painting? The mirror on the back wall shows the king and queen, standing exactly where we stand. Picasso made 58 variations of it. The red cross on Velázquez’s chest was added after his death, when he was made a knight.
