L'Absinthe by Edgar Degas

A woman and a man sit side by side in a Paris café, not talking. In front of her is a glass of cloudy green absinthe. She stares into nothing.

Degas used two friends as models: an actress and an engraver. When the painting was shown in London in 1893 it caused a scandal, and people assumed the models really were drunks. Degas had to say publicly that they weren’t.
