The Heart of the Andes by Frederic Edwin Church

A vast panorama of the South American Andes, from a jungle stream to a snowy peak. Frederic Church traveled through Ecuador to sketch it.

When he showed it in New York in 1859, visitors paid 25 cents to see it in a darkened room, lit by gas lamps, with opera glasses to study the details. Thousands came in the first weeks.
