Collection/1600s

A young woman turns toward us over her shoulder, under a broad, flaming red hat. The finials of her chair are carved as lion heads. It is painted on a small wooden panel, about the size of a postcard.
It is one of Vermeer’s smallest works. Experts at the National Gallery of Art concluded in 2022 that it is by Vermeer himself.
