Collection/1600s

A young woman reads a letter by an open window, her face reflected faintly in the glass. Vermeer painted it around 1657–59.
For centuries the back wall was bare. A restoration finished in 2021 revealed that someone had painted over a large picture of Cupid hanging there, probably after Vermeer’s death. The Cupid is now back.
