Collection/1400s

Ginevra de’ Benci was a Florentine teenager, about sixteen, when the young Leonardo painted her around 1475. Behind her pale face rises a dark juniper bush. The Italian for juniper is ginepro, a pun on her name.
It is the only painting by Leonardo in the Americas. The National Gallery of Art bought it in 1967 from the Prince of Liechtenstein for a record price. Turn it over and the back is painted too: a wreath of laurel and palm around a juniper sprig, with the motto “Beauty adorns virtue.”
