Collection/1400s

A vast altarpiece of twelve panels in St Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent, finished in 1432. In the center, a crowd of saints, prophets and angels comes to worship a lamb on an altar, symbol of Christ.
It is said to be the most frequently stolen artwork in history. One panel, The Just Judges, was stolen in 1934 and never found. A recent restoration revealed that the Lamb originally had a strikingly human face.
