Self-Portrait by Paul Gauguin

Gauguin painted himself with a halo, an apple and a snake, as a mock saint or devil, on a cupboard door at an inn in Brittany in 1889.

The colors are flat and the outlines bold, like a poster or a stained-glass window. The joke is serious: Gauguin saw himself as both a martyr and a sinner.
