Dancers Practicing at the Barre by Edgar Degas

Two dancers stretch at the barre, one leg raised, in a bare green room. A watering can stands on the floor, used to dampen the floorboards.

In 1912 the collector Louisine Havemeyer bought it for $95,700, then a record price for a work by a living artist. Degas reportedly said he was like a racehorse that wins the race and gets only its bag of oats.
