A couple waltzes in a ballroom, the woman in a white satin dress, her partner in evening wear. The model was Suzanne Valadon, who later became an important painter herself.

Renoir painted it in 1883 as a pair with Dance in the Country, which shows a merrier couple outdoors. Both hang in the Musée d’Orsay.
