Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet by Gustave Courbet

On a country road near Montpellier, Courbet, carrying his painting gear on his back, meets his patron Alfred Bruyas and Bruyas’s servant. The patron takes off his hat to the artist, not the other way round.

Critics mocked it as Bonjour, Monsieur Courbet! for its cockiness, and the nickname stuck. Look at Courbet’s pointed beard, raised proudly.
