Blue Horse I by Franz Marc

A young blue horse stands in a landscape of red, yellow and purple hills. Franz Marc gave colors meanings: for him blue was masculine and spiritual, yellow gentle and feminine, red heavy and violent.

In 1911 he and Wassily Kandinsky founded the artists’ group The Blue Rider. Marc was killed in the First World War, near Verdun, in 1916. He was 36.
