Bathsheba at Her Bath by Rembrandt

In the Bible, King David sees Bathsheba bathing and summons her. Rembrandt shows her afterwards, holding his letter, lost in thought, while a servant dries her feet.

The model was probably Hendrickje Stoffels, Rembrandt’s companion. That same year, 1654, she was summoned by the church council for living with him unmarried.
