Collection/1600s

A young woman dozes at a table, her head on her hand, beside a wine jug and a bowl of fruit. A door stands open to another room.
It is one of Vermeer’s earliest interiors, from around 1657. X-rays show he first painted a man standing in the doorway and a dog, then removed them, leaving the scene a mystery.
